讲座内容摘要

This paper examines how climate amenities shape the geography of innovation through the spatial sorting of inventive talent. We combine daily climate records with more than 50 million Chinese patent records to construct a city-level panel linking climate conditions, innovation outcomes, and bilateral inventor mobility over 2000–2019. Using apparent temperature as our primary measure of local climate amenity, we document a robust positive relationship between more favorable climatic conditions and local patenting, particularly invention patents. We then examine inventor movements across cities to uncover the underlying mechanism. Cities with more favorable climate conditions attract more inventors, and innovation generated by incoming inventors accounts for an important part of the observed relationship between climate amenities and local innovation. Once patents associated with mobile inventors are excluded, this relationship becomes substantially weaker. At the individual level, we find little evidence that more favorable climate conditions systematically raise inventor productivity. Evidence from migrant surveys and online job postings also provides limited support for alternative explanations based on wages, employment opportunities, or stronger local demand for skilled labor. Overall, the results suggest that climate amenities shape the geography of innovation primarily by influencing the spatial allocation of inventive human capital rather than by directly increasing individual productivity.
